Side Effects of Chlorpromazine and their Management with Artane for Drug Induced Extrapyramidal Reaction


Abstract
The authors tried to study on the side effects of Chlorpromazine, evaluate the effect of Artane and observe the recurrence rate of extrapyramidal reaction after the withdrawal ¢¥of maintenance doses of
Artane.
This study includes 50 patients who were hospitalized in Chung Rhang Ri Mental Hospital and 20 pati¡þents in Nam San Mental Hospital in Seoul.
The results are as follows.
1) Extrapyramidal reactions were developed among 43% of cases.
2) Extrapyramidal symptoms were appeared one day later the initial administration of chlorpromazine. The authors could observe that torticollis was relatively early appeared "symptom and tremor tended
to be appeared" later.
3) The authors were impressed that the amount of chlorpromazine did not determined the appearance of extrapyramidal symptoms.
4) 80% of extrapyramidal symptoms were managed successfully with Artane. To manage them, succ¡þessive 4 days of Artane administration (6-10mg daily) were needed.
5) Artane was more effective in rigidity than in tremor and especially, highly effective in the management of torticollis or retrocollis
6) The side effects of Artane were not significant.
